Antique Sterling Silver British Inkerman Chain and Whistle

This antique British Inkerman chain and whistle probably dates to around 1900. The chain and whistle was worn by non-commissioned officers of the Light Infantry Division of the British army as part of their formal uniform attire. The lion’s head boss was affixed to the center of the NCO’s red sash and the whistle was kept in a slot on the right hand side of the belt buckle.
The information about the Inkerman chain and whistle says that they are made of sterling. I have been unable to locate any sterling marks on the piece, but the whistle and chain certainly has the appearance of sterling…I’m not so sure about he lion head boss as the reverse side exhibits a little rust.
The lion badge is 1 3/4′ in diameter and the whistle is 1 3/4″ in length including the loop on top of the whistle. The chain is 17 1/2″ in length made from solid silver loops.
There are some small dents around the outside of the badge and there may have been some kind of backing. The black globs on the back (hardened) might be some kind of fixative.
Altogether it is in very nice condition and the whistle does the job!
