Item Description
We are pleased to offer this Antique Salesman Sample of a American Walnut Candle Stand. Full detailing, including a carved and turned pedestal base terminating in 3 carved paw feet and a beautiful incised rim table top. Measures 18″ high. Salesmans samples were a common item in the late 19th, early 20th century, as salesmen needed a smaller version of their product to show off to retailers, and retailers in turn needed a way to demonstrate the features of larger items, which might need to be ordered from the manufacturer, to their customers. Many salesmans samples were highly detailed, with additional marketing copy pointing out important features of the product.Research Consulted: Collectors Weekly; Revised Catalog of American Antiques by William Ketchum.
