I searched the Internet for a comparable example and finally found one after a rather extensive search. After finding out it was by Magener I found a few more pictures of it. As it turned out, I’d been chasing the same scales as it traveled around from museum to museum / lecture to lecture as part of the Amsterdam Bakelite Collection. It first popped up on my radar at “The Hudson River Museum at Yonkers.†Further surfing found only one or two more examples, so I have no qualms about dubbing it, “rare.â€
Mine is in beautiful condition with a smooth, even surface and a deep red to maroon color. Any variations in color are simply reflections of its surroundings in my little photo dungeon. That is why I’ve included a copy of the photo promoting the traveling exhibit. See next image.
All the rest of the images in my description are photos of mine, but their photograph is better, dang-it! I keep picking up spots where no spots exist.
It stands just over 9†tall with a 7 ½†diameter bowl-shaped pan, a separate and removable piece.
There is some age toning of the thin dial cover, but at least it’s still there. I haven’t tried to clean it. The range is 0 to 5 kg. It seems to be fairly accurate but likely needs to be adjusted using the two screws on the very top. That’s why they’re there.
The rest of the description with more pictures continues below this memo about my two “Prime Directives:”
First: I never, under any circumstances, use a reserve, and everything starts at $9, sometimes even less. I never end auctions early.
Second: I rarely clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. Normally I push enough dust aside to note any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I’ll tell you about it.
So rest easy and have some fun. Why not place a little tiny bid right now so’s you don’t forget about it later.
Oops. I should have dusted it a little. The two outer screws are for fine tuning the scales.
The bottom is sturdy metal. There are no markings.
The first thing you do when using a set of scales is to make sure it is sitting level. This piece is all original including the feet, one of which turns in and out for leveling the scales.
Seeing the photo I borrowed makes me really appreciate professional photographers. Mine looks exactly like their photo, but I just can’t make it happen, which is likely why I’m a peddler rather than a photographer.
ABSOLUTELY NO DISAPPOINTMENTS
GOOD LUCK
