BUDDHA: ANTIQUE THAI, VITARKA MUDRA: GIVING INSTRUCTION, late 1800’s,GILT BRONZE

This is an interesting and charming figure of the Lord Buddha cast by the lost wax process and gilded in Thailand sometime in the late 1800’s.
This Buddha stands almost in a contrapposto, with most of his weight on his left leg. This is slightly unusual in Southeastern art. He also holds his right arm and hand in the Vitarka Mudra, or the gesture of teaching. His palm is raised outward close to his chest and his thumb and forefinger make a circle. This mudra or gesture is also known as “closing the circle of the law”.
He holds his left arm at waist level with the palm up. The thumb and forefinger of his left hand also make a circle, so this may be a variation of the Vitarka Mudra used to emphasize the Buddha’s role as a teacher. It may also have been that originally he held a cintanami, or pearl of wisdom, in his left hand. But I think not, for there is no interruption of the gilding on his left palm.
This figure of the Buddha measures 4 inches tall . On the turned wooden base, is 5 inches tall. The entire figure was originally gilded except for the small disk upon which he stands. But much of he gold has been worn away creating a beautiful patina with the flashing of the remaining gold against the chocolate brown color of the underlying bronze.
The photos give an excellent idea of the beauty and finesse of this wonderful piece of Thai sacred art.
