Each stand measures 12.0″ (32.0 cm) tall x 7.0″ (18.2 cm) at the widest. Each stand is composed of a bronze incense holder, 6 panel bronze and cloisonne ‘ruyi’ cloud Daoist emblem, bronze phoenix stem, and gold gilt copper base inlaid with enamel. The overall design seems to be based upon the staff of the Monk XuanZang from the famous story, Journey to The West.
The ‘ruyi’ cloud emblems are gilt in gold and have Taoist symbols incorporated into the design. The emblem is made up of 6 panels, each representing the 6 perfections, generosity, discipline, tolerance, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. The cloisonne work has been shown to experts and is believed to be 17/18th c.
The gold gilt base is carved on the top in the shape of waves, while the sides are like lappets on the lotus flower. Each lappet was originally inlaid with turquoise colored enamel. The base appears to be 18th c. from the Qianlong period.
The remainder of the stand appears to be 19th c., but perhaps earlier.
Condition: Very Good condition overall. One stand tilts due to the metal rod being slightly bent. The ‘ruyi’ emblem has a few mall chips to the cloisonne and 2 panels need some re-soldering of the bronze in the middle of the emblem. Copper bases have excellent gold gilt, but most of enamel is missing and there is a slight dent to the top – hard to see.
