Singer Child’s Sewing Machine, Model 20

Serviced and Adjusted, See Sewing Video Below

Satisfaction Guaranteed!

This is a vintage Singer Sewing Machine #20 in exceptional condition. It was considered a child’s hand crank machine in the 1950s. As a collector’s item today it is both stunning to look at and fun to sew on. I serviced and adjusted it for excellent chain stitch sewing. I’ve already packed it, so I can ship it right away for mother’s day. Below, see many photos plus a video of this machine sewing.

An extensive setup is included with original items like the Simanco C-clamp, manual, and supplies including vintage thread on wooden spools and Singer needle. A new domed wood case is included with the machine. The following picture shows the full setup you will receive, while later pictures show you close-ups of these same items and the machine sewing.

Hand Crank.

The Singer model #20 is a hand crank machine. It is geared for the needle to move several times per crank of the wheel, just like larger hand crank Singers.

Gorgeous.

This machine is in exceptional condition. The decals on the front and back are bright and clear, the paint is shiny, and the Singer emblem remains bright .

Carefully Serviced.

I’ve sewn on Singers for 55 years and I’ve collected them for most of that time. It is a hobby for me to care for these wonderful vintage Singers, and I carefully cleaned and adjusted this machine for you. I cleaned each grove of the gears and then lightly lubricated them so they move easily. Below, you can see the gears are clean and the grooves of the handwheel engage well with the small metal inner gear.

I thoroughly cleaned the tension system for you, which includes both the circular discs and the release bar on the top of the machine. As you can see, the parts are in with no rust.

I cleaned and lubricated the presser foot mechanism. You can see the internal spring is clean and strong.

I cleaned the feed dogs and stitch length mechanism. They are in good condition with no rust. You can also see that the paint on the machine and bed is clean and shiny.

I put on new felt on the bottom for you, so it will protect your table.

I cleaned and timed the hook. It is sharp and catches the thread well. The front bar moves to change the stitch length. As you can see, the mechanisms in this machine are in exceptional condition.

Wonderful Package.

A nice package of items and supplies comes with this machine.

Original Clamp.

The original, matching tan, C-clamp comes with this machine. You can clamp the machine to the table, so it is secure for hand cranking. The clamp has a V-shape end to place in the machine’s recess and I’ve included a small felt pad you can use on the machine to keep it from scratching. The clamp has a few minor scratches, which may be from storage. The machine clamping area is perfect with no scratches; this machine looks like it has never been used before. The clamp has its original mark “Simanco.”

Fabric Guide.

Simliar to the “big” Singers there is a fabric guide. This is a small Singer guide. This new thumb screw, which can be screwed on by hand, secures the guide to the bed. Because of the slot in the guide, you can position the guide closer or father from the needle as desired.

Manual.

An original Singer Model #20 manual is included. It is in good vintage condition with minor dog-ear edges and minor marks. I will add a diagram sheet that compares different types of vintage sewing machine systems, including the chain stitch system like this Singer #20 model.

Needles & Thread.

There is a very nice package with this machine. One original new Singer needle and several other new round needles are included. You will also receive 10 spools of vintage thread, all in the original wooden spools. These make a nice vintage collection, but it’s best to use new thread for your projects. A new black zipper case is also included for your supplies.

I’ve also added two new spool pin felts, which I made in two sizes for different thread spools. To keep the tension discs clean, a new brush is included in your setup.

Domed Wood Case.

A new wood case is included for the machine. This case is dome shaped, similar to the famous domed wood Bentwood cases of antique Singer machines

The machine fits securely on the left side with room for supplies on the right. It latches closed in the front.

Yes, It Sews.

Yes, the machine sews. Singer said this was not a “toy” but an actual “Child’s Sewing Machine” and yes, it does sew. This is a chain-stitch machine which uses one thread for both the top and bottom. The chain part is on the underside, so it appears thicker. The instruction books says you can display the chain stitch side for decorative work as well as using the chain stich in seams. The photo below shows this machine sewing on cotton. I turned the fabric so you can see both sides of the stitch.

This machine also sews on thick fabric like denim. The photo below shows both sides of fabric with this machine sewing on denim.

This was made as a child’s machine and it’s wonderful to collect and use as a small hand crank machine; however, if I were to do a lot of sewing like quilting, I would prefer to use a smoother electric machine like the vintage Singer 201, 221, 301, or 401.

Threading the machine is easy, as Singer embedded numbers on the parts. The instructions in the manual are helpful for threading and adjusting stitch length.

Video.

I made a video so you can see this machine sewing. This example is sewing on denim. I put the video on YouTube, so you will not have to download any file. (Use your computer “back” button to return to this page.)

Vintage Machine and Setup.
This machine was made by Singer in the 1950s. This vintage Singer #20 sewing machine is in exceptional condition. It is as near new looking as any I’ve seen. The finish is superb. I had to look very closely to show you any marks. On the bed there is one very light scratch near the hole where the fabric guide screws in. There are a few tiny pin size spots on the handwheel edge. There is not rust on the metal parts or mechanism. See the close-up photos in this listing.

Adult Collectible/Ages.

This machine is being sold as a collectible miniature sewing machine for adults only. *Although it was marketed by Singer in 1950s as a child’s machine and some call it a “toy” machine, it is not a toy in the current 2011 year requirements because of the moving parts. When I’ve used the word “toy” in the title and the description, I am referring to it as a adult-toy, not a child’s toy. Adults will find this a great machine to collect and a fun machine to use.

This is a very small machine. It is about 7″ wide, 6 3/4″ tall, and 4″ deep. It is metal and weighs about 1 pound and 10 ounces.

While it has similar basic features to the larger vintage Singers like an adjustable tension, grooved feed dogs, nice bed sewing surface, and similar quality paint, it is considerably smaller. The following photo shows my personal Singer #20 model in the front with my Singer 401 model in the back. This is for demonstration of size and similar features. My personal #20 and 401 models in the photo below are not included.

All photos, except for the size demonstration photo above, show the actual Singer model #20 machine and setup you will receive. It’s a gorgeous Singer #20 sewing machine.

Packing.

I respect the vintage quality of this machine and I will pack all items with great care. The machine will be threaded with a sample started, so you can sew right away. The case packs perfectly to ship, and for you to store, with the clamp, attachments case, and machine inside. See the comments in my ebay feedback regarding good packing and fast shipping.
