The use of weights and scales to check the weight of circulating coins has been documented since the 13th Century. Special sets of scales and weights were in use since the 16th Century….and the reason for this was simply because there was a practice of ‘shaving’ valuable gold coins!
This auction is for a rare and unusual set of folding scales and weights dating from the late 18th to early 19th Century. The set is composed of a set of scales and a 5 coin weights. The weights are for the guinea, half guinea, sovereign, half sovereign and 7 shilling piece. All are marked with the lion passant, which was the mark for London. The weights are complete and all match which is very rare indeed. The scale itself is in perfect working order with a lovely movement. The scale is not marked, but a similar set is mentioned in the Michael Crawforth book. The dimensions of the box are about 5.25 inches x 1.5 inches.
This set is a wonderful piece of history, and very difficult to find. A great collector’s piece!
