Rare & original Japanese woodblock print book set (2 volumes), WESTERN MEDICINE HANDBOOK, Ansei 4 (1857). This set was published in the same year that the Nagasaki Medical School (IGAKU DENSHUSHO) was established by Dr. Pompe van Meerdevoort who gave the first lectures in Japan on Western medical & surgical sciences. Each volume measures 7 X 10 inches (closed) and there are a total of 188 pages, 44 of which have fine early woodblock prints. Original covers & title slips, contents complete, fine impressions, wormage to volume 2, generally poor to fair shape but quite rare as an early Japanese set on Western medicine, & GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC. NOTE: These volumes were too large for my scanner. The pages are UNTRIMMED & have FULL MARGINS.
