This fabulous antique cloth doll dates to the 1930’s. Known as Dolly Dingle, she started out life as an illustration by Grace Drayton (around 1915), before becoming a popular paper doll shortly thereafter. If the face of this doll looks familiar, it is because it is very similar to another famous face by Drayton, The Campbell Soup Kids. Georgene Averill, prolific manufactuer of the infamous Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, is responsible for turning Drayton’s Dolly Dingle paper dolls, into this cloth version. Standing 13.5 inches, she has the early drawn face with painted features. Faded, odor-free and lightly soiled, she is cotton or wool-stuffed. Interestingly, embedded in her torso is a wood and metal music box that plays Rock A Bye Baby (in a treetop..) Â Although the box is a little askew within the body, it does play loud and well. Recostumed in a cute pink dress, this adorable Dolly Dingle will definitely please the lover of antique cloth/baby dolls.
