Welcome, friend!
Be sure to check out my blog to see how you can win free shipping for life!

I was so delighted when I first opened this antique finger jointed wood box to find that it’s a general store counter display box from the late 1800’s. On its inside lid you’ll find its original paper advertising label for Stewart’s Duplex Safety Pins, Patented Jan. 1, 1878, March 7, 1882, February 19, 1889. It advertised and originally contained 4 sizes of safety pins.

No. 1 – For Laces, Ruffles, Millinery Uses
No. 2 – For Dress Purposes
No. 3 – For Hose and Underwear
No. 4 – For Nursery and Shawl Purposes

It goes on to read…
Locks securely in the dark as freely as in the light, and from either side, and cannot miss fastening by passing through; also has the additional advantage of the “Guard Attachment” over the coil, so that no fabric can catch therein.
Stewart’s Pins only have this protector.

The box measures 11″L x 5-1/4″W x 2″T and still retains its original brass catch and tiny hinges; now perfectly mellowed. The box is in with no damage; just note that a few inner dividers are missing. A bit of faint writing is present on the label which appears to be the original prices posted for the pins and reads, “2 Large Sizes 10 cents & 2 Small Sizes 5 cents” (followed by what I believe to be the abbreviation for “dozen”). Note that the holes within the fasteners are heart shaped…I love that part. What a charming addition this strong advertising gem would be to your millinery, sewing or fabric related collection!
