Rare Edwardian Sterling Silver Novelty Pig Shape Pierced Body Sewing Needle / Pin Cushion dated 1904

This Rare Antique Sewing Needle or Pin Cushion measures approximately 2 7/8 inches or 73 mm in length from its tail to its snout by 1 1/8 inches or 29 mm across the widest part of its body from side to side and it stands 1 1/2 inches or 38 mm tall.

The pin cushion is made from sterling silver in the novelty form of a standing pig that has a pierced body that is material filled so that sewing needles or pins can be pushed through the holes keeping them in place, the pig has an open belly on its underside with its original internal leather pad and it has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram as photographed below, the side of the upper body has been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,

L & S – Anchor – Lion Passant – e

L & S is the Birmingham silversmith or makers mark of Levi & Salaman, the Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the letter e is the date letter for 1904.

The rarity of this sewing needle or pin cushion is in the fact that it has a holed or pierced body instead of the normal padded open backed version that is normally seen.

The condition is used and Excellent for its age.

The Needle or Pin Cushion has No Large Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I have found, the pig stands upright, the definition and decoration is fairly crisp, the silver hallmark is still legible although as this novelty shape sewing needle or pin cushion is a used antique it does have some small shallow dents around its body along with some minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss. Personally I think that this antique novelty pig shape sewing needle or pin cushion can still be used today and that it would make a superb addition to any collection, I also think that it looks fantastic considering that it’s almost 110 years old.

This Superb Rare Edwardian Sterling Silver Novelty Pig Shape Sewing Needle or Pin Cushion by Levi & Salaman dated 1904 is one of several pieces of antique silver that I have also listed.
