A beautful example of a very finely made early-19th Century Carpenter’s boxwood, brass & steel slide rule. This has no makers name or mark that I can see – but is obviously made by a seasoned and accomplished rule maker. Date-wise – it carries the pre-Imperial gauge points WG (Wine Gauge) at 17.15, and AG (Ale Gauge) at the 18.95 mark. These became obsolete after the introduction of the Imperial system in 1824, and rules made after this point usually featured an Imperial Gallons (IG) mark instead – at 18.8. It also has the early Edge & Middle scales on the reverse – which on later rules more frequently became 8 Square and Line. Due to the early look of the font used, I would place this rule somewhere between 1815~1820.

Nice scale-marked arch hinge, holding pins and protection plates – together with the early 19th Century habit of using steel for the end caps. The inch scales are sub-divided in 8ths and in 16ths. The slide moves firmly but smoothly, and as usual for these kind of high-end rules, is double-sided – with an imperial Inch scale marked on the reverse. Nicely stamped marker’s ID – or perhaps mating number ’22’ in the well under the slide.

Condition: Superb for age. Check the supersize pictures for condition. No real signs or any significant use or wear. No previous owner’s marks. Both holding pins in place. Joint as firm and secure as when manufactured. A slight bow to the rule when folded is the only thing to mention here.
