Having survived in remarkable condition after well over a century,
likely used for serving bread, this oval plate is free of any chips or cracks and
still retains a rich glaze over the sturdy stoneware.
Playing an interesting role in 19th century American transportation as well as communications,
remembered as the Bay Line, the Baltimore Steam Packet Company ships narrowed the time and
distance gap by delivering government mail packets to cities spanning the Chesapeake Bay.
Eventually acquired by the Seaboard Air Line Railways,
an interesting piece for the serious collector of ship as well as rail history.
