We were lucky enough recently to be able to purchase some items out of a small collection of 18th century woodenware that was assembled over forty years ago, picked by an early collector attending estate sales, shows and auctions throughout the North East. This particular tankard was amongst said collection and exhibits the wonderful style of an early example.
As seen in numerous books on period American woodenware (see "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" by Nuemann) tankards such as this were used as drinking vessels, holding a variety of liquids, including ales, beers, etc.
Staved design with a bottom and a center wooden band, this example having a lid.
Nice size being 8 3/4" tall.
Certain to look wonderful amongst period country woodenware.
Up for a week, no reserve and a low starting bid.
