You are viewing a Civil War Fife. I found this hidden in a piece of furniture. I don’t know what kind of wood this is, if you want to enlighten me be my guest. I believe the end pieces are brass. You can see clear through this fife and that is how I found the curled up piece of paper inside. It is very hard to read, but this is what I think it says:
Rebel Fife Captured at Frank Fight by (apparently a signature) 1864
Now honestly, I am no Civil War expert. I don’t know when this note was written. Although I did take the time to research the battles in 1864. There was a battle in Frankfort, Ky in June of 1864. There was also a battle in Franklin, Mo. October 1st 1864. And finally there were 3 battles in Franklin TN in 1864 one on September 2, another on November 29th & 30th and the last December 17. I think this last battle was significant because 1800 confederate soldiers were wounded, sick and captured in that battle. The writer of the note specifically states “captured” in his writing. I found this information in the book Authentic Civil War Battle Sites by E.S. (Rocky) LeGaye. According to Google answers lined paper as this note is written on was available even before the Civil War.
I cannot tell you the origin of the piece of furniture because it came from an auction house, so who knows.
The fife measures approximately 14 7/8″ long.
