On offer is a fully cleaned, serviced & working English gilt brass compensated pocket aneroid barometer and altimeter
The dial of the barometer is silvered with black lettering, the hand is blue steel. It is marked:

The inner chapter ring is marked 21 to 31 and indicates the atmospheric pressure in inches of mercury, the outer chapter ring is marked 0 to 10,000 and indicates your height above sea level in feet.
The bezel and outer chapter ring rotates so you can record the relative changes in pressure or height. There is a screw on the rear for calibration
The barometer case is gilt brass.
This is a nice example of a late 19th century gilt brass English compensated pocket barometer and altimeter, in good overall condition:
Barometer condition: Good, there are a couple of minor dents on the rear near the pendant but no scratches. The gilt finish is good with one or two areas of wear on the rear and side. The bezel rotates smoothly. The pendant bow is a replacement.Glass crystal: Original, bevelled, there are a couple of very minor scratches.Dial condition: Excellent.The barometer is in full working order and has been tested against a digital barometer set to inches of mercury, the results indicate that, within the limitation of an instrument made over 100 years ago, it is accurate.Barometer Size: 50mm (1.98 inches) in diameter and 20mm (0.78 inches) thick. Barometer weight: 81g (2.87 oz) not including case.
This instrument is the 19th century equivalent of GPS, Victorian men (it was nearly always men) would purchase this sort of instrument before embarking on an adventure, probably involving hill climbing, ballooning or mountaineering. This instrument could not only be used to predict the weather (rain, sun etc.) but was also able to indicate your height above sea level.
To measure your height you rotate the front bezel until the zero on the outer chapter ring is in line with the hand (assuming you are at sea level), then as you climb, the hand moves due to the fall in air pressure.
The word ‘compensated’ on the dial refers to the fact that this barometer automatically adjusts the reading for changes in temperature there by giving a more accurate result.
