is a Very Unusual Western Electric Wood Wall Telephone. From the information I could find it is a “Fiddleback” style and a Model 312 A (stamped in the back see 19th picture). The Telephone has a bakelite earpiece marked “KELLOGG”. From what I was able to research these telephones were used by railroads to provide private telephone service over telegraph circuits. The telephone rang using a “howler” (cone shaped device mounted above the telephone). The bakelite mouthpiece is chipped on the telphone and I also see that what I originally thought were seams are actual splits to the wood that have been repaired (8th & 9th pictures). I’m not sure but I think the wood is mahogany and has a beautiful finish. There is a wiring schemantic on the inside that has a Patent date of “Sept. 11, 1894”. Very neat old telephone that displays very well.
I recently acquired a number of telephones from a large collection and will be listing them over the next few weeks.
