Palais
Royal Mother of Pearl Scissors

French
* Circa 1820

These
beautifully carved mother of pearl scissors came from a fitted box of
Palais Royal sewing tools. The handles are carved in the form of
butterflies alighting on flowers. The
gilded
mounts are embossed with floral designs.

Aside from a
small chip at the base of one bow that has been repaired (see close up
photo), the condition
is excellent with no other damage.

The
steel
blades are tight with sharp points and they cut beautifully. They still
have some of the original polished finish with no rust or
damage.

They
measure 3 7/8″ long and 1 1/2″ across the bows. A variety
of
Palais
Royal scissors are
shown
on pp. 49-57 of Nerylla Taunton’s book
Antique
Needlework Tools and Embroideries and
Gay
Ann Rogers shows several pairs on p. 107 of her book The Illustrated History of
Needlework Tools.
