Antique Ladies American Waltham Pocket Watch

Dial Has Several Cracks

Recent estate find. Measures approximately 1-3/4″ wide. Weighs 63 grams. The movement is marked American Waltham and has the serial number 5357609. The gold-filled case is marked Fahys Montauk No.1.

I wound the watch, and it started to tick. It has been keeping time for the past few hours. I have no idea how well or accurate the watch will work in the long run. It has likely been quite some time since the movement was last cleaned and serviced – I don’t know.

I know very little about pocket watches, so I apologize greatly for my ignorance.

The reason I obtained this watch to offer here on was because it had such a fancy case, and I loved the floral and butterfly dial. The dial is beautiful, however, the dial also has several cracks.

There are essentially four cracks on the dial. The first goes through the 12 and 11 then splits into two lines that go to the edge. The second begins on the edge and goes through the number 10 and ends near the center. The third begins on the edge, goes through the number 7 and ends in the seconds dial. There is a fourth line that is much more difficult to recognize – it begins near the bottom and goes straight up to the center of the seconds dial.

These lines look like crackles. They are most easily recognized with a bright light.

The black letters, borders and whatnot on the dial do look to be faded and dulled some.

The front cover springs open, closes and latches well. The back cover opens and closes with what I believe to be just the right amount of resistance, but it doesn’t really latch. There seems to be just a bit of a catch. It doesn’t take much to pull the back cover open. I’m not sure if this is normal or not. The cover stays closed and all that jazz, but I don’t know – it just seems to open a little too easily. Maybe I am being picky. The dust cover latches as well as it should.

The dust cover and the inside of the back and front covers all have a good deal of light scratching and dullness. There is a small watch repairman inscription on the inside of the back cover. The bezel has a somewhat nasty amount of scratching, dullness and related wear. I also noticed some glue residue along the edge of the crystal and bezel.

There is some heavy scratch wear to the area on the case that is directly under the dust cover’s lip. The inside of the back cover’s lip has an evident amount of darkening, and there’s some scratching and related wear.

The crystal looks OK with only a minor amount of scratching. I assume the crystal is a relatively modern replacement.

The case as a whole has quite an evident amount of scratching and dullness. This surface wear on the case is most easily recognized on the plain areas, such as the shield on front and the flower on back. The fancy design of the case helps mask the scratching and dullness. The details are worn and dulled a little with some loss and fading. I didn’t see any brass showing.

The area under the crown is blackened. I also noticed that some of the tight spots of the design need a detailed cleaning.

I personally think this is nice watch. The cracks on the dial are a disappointment, but I still think it’s a fun dial, and though the case has lots of scratching and dullness, it looks rather good and seems to have been well cared for. In short, I think it’s a pretty watch, but I have no idea how much interest you all may or may not have in it. I am going to just start it out at ninety-eight cents and let it sell to the highest bidder.

The fancy design on this case helps mask the scratching and dullness. You can still easily see the scratching on the plain areas, such as seen on the shield in a photo above.
