Here is a Original GAR Grand Army of the Republic Sword & Scabbard with Washingtons Head and Eagle guard Civil War Era Antique Cermonial Sword. The blade is engraved but I cannot read it. The blade has light rust as does the scabbard. All the brass is in very good condition. All can be cleaned up with a little elbow grease. The sword and scabbard measure 37″ long and in very good condition. I believe this is a hard to find GAR Sword Circa from the 1870-1890 era.
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, US Navy, US Marines and US Revenue Cutter Service who served in the American Civil War. Founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, it was dissolved in 1956 when its last member died. Linking men through their experience of the war, the GAR became among the first organized advocacy groups in American politics, supporting voting rights for black veterans, lobbying the US Congress to establish veterans’ pensions, and supporting Republican political candidates. Its peak membership, at more than 400,000, was in 1890; a high point of Civil War commemorative ceremonies
