A Beautiful Antique Edwardian Black Silk Satin, Cotton and Chiffon Bodice dated to around 1906 – Size S
Description
This bodice was part of a afternoon or evening ensemble. Sadly, the skirt is now missing. The bodice is made of a fine black silk satin with polka dots and a cream coloured ruched chiffon and satin lining front and collar. The bodice is fully lined with sprigged silvery grey and black cotton and is fully boned. It has a slight pigeon breast front and a high collar. (The last photo show similar styled bodices on fashion plates dating to 1906). The sleeves are a 1/2-3/4 length and gathered around the shoulders. The front, back and sleeves have ruched ribbon trims and flower shapes made of silk thread attached to it. There are two large round metallic shell-shaped buttons attached to the front of the bodice. The bodice has an internal Petersham band that would be tied and secured around the waist to keep the bodice in place. It also has internal hooks on the back of the waist that would hook into the skirt to ensure a smooth silhouette. The bodice closes with hooks and eyes on the front and hooks and eyes over the shoulder and on the back of the neck. It is machine and hand sewn.
This bodice was meant to be worn with long white kid gloves (see fashion plates).
The bodice is probably a modern size UK 10 (EU 36-38, US 8) (but please check the measurements to be certain) and its measurements are as follows (measured when lying flat):
Length: 18.5″ (front); 16.5″ (back)
Bust: 17-17.5″ (ca. 34-35″ all around)
Waist: 13-13.5″ (ca. 26-27″ all around)
Width at shoulders: 15″
Length of sleeves: 15″
The
bodice is in (see photos). The only faults I could find were holes in the silk lining under the chiffon on the collar (see last photo) and a missing hook at the back of the collar. The chiffon is light grey in colour (see last photo). I am not sure if it is just grubby or if it is meant to be this colour.

Packaging and postage to the UK via Airmail will cost £4.40, within Europe via Airmail £4.40 (ca. 5.30 Euro), overseas via Airmail £4.50 (ca. US$7.00). Please note that all items above £20 will be sent via Registered Mail. This would cost an extra £3.70 (4,30 Euro, US$5.80).
