An Antique Edwardian Black Embroidered Silk & Lace Bodice dated to 1908-1909 – Size XL
Description
This bodice was part of an entire ensemble, but sadly the skirt is now missing. The bodice is made of a fine black embroidered medium weight silk with a black French or Spanish machine-made lace overlay around the neck area and on the sleeves. The silk shows Chinese-style embroidery of foliage and has an elaborate silk fringe attached. The bodice is fully lined with fine black cotton. It has a slight pigeon breast front and a high (empire) waist. (The last photo show similar styled bodices on fashion plates dating to 1908/1909). The long sleeves are constructed of a wider oversleeve and a tight fitting undersleeve with a white chiffon lining that peeks out at the sleeve ends. White chiffon is also attached to underneath the lace around the neck.
The bodice closes with hooks and eyes on the front. It is machine and hand sewn.
The bodice has two snaps attached at the waist on the back onto which the skirt would have been attached and held in place.
The bodice is probably a modern size UK 18-20 (EU 44-46, US 16-18) (but please check the measurements to be certain) and its measurements are as follows (measured when lying flat):
Length: 17.5″
Bust: 22″ (ca. 44″ all around)
Waist: 22″ (ca. 44″ all around)
Width at shoulders: 17″
Length of sleeves: 21.5″
The
bodice is in good condition, but it has a few issues as follows: there is a silk extension at the lower hem at the waist which was tucked into the skirt (it may be a slightly later addition – still Edwardian though) – this extension has holes and tears from wear, but this does not extend to the bodice itself (see the photo showing the inside of the bodice). The front of the bodice (where it closes) and the oversleeves have tears where the silk is folded (see photos) and I found two tears/holes the lace on the sleeves (see photos). A small section of the knotted silk fringe is damaged/missing (see photos). The bodice is in very clean condition externally, but has a few light coloured stains on the lining (nothing dramatic) (see photos).
