A GREAT 18th Century American Antique Wrought Iron New England Fireplace Trammel
Description:
Fine Example of An American Wrought Iron 18th Century Fireplace Trammel
Outstanding condition, construction, form and original patina.
Dating circa 1740-1780, this iron fireplace trammel is almost identical to those illustrated in the landmark antique reference book "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" by George Nuemann.
A trammel chain would have been suspended on the interior of an open hearth stonework fireplace.
The larger top loop would have been hung off a lug pole or iron hook, with the links draping below.
The very bottom hook would have supported the bail of a kettle, or pot.
As a means to adjust the temperature of the contents of the hearth article, the kettle or pot would have been raised or lowered from the fire, this would have been done by placing the small hook adjacent to the bottom hook on an upper link, thereby creating a shorter chain, and thus a shorter distance of exposure from the kettle or pot to the flames of the fire.
This piece measures 60" in length when fully expanded, but of course can be adjusted to suit the needs of a user or open hearth.
Take a moment to click on the images and you’ll see enlargements that showcase the craftsmanship of this blacksmith made example, the smith working to create 15 individual formed links, a truly impressive illustration of period tradesman.
A lovely example of period American ironware certain to compliment any open hearth or ironware collection.
