Fine 18th, Early 19th C American Antique Wrought Iron Tasting Spoon Folk Art NR

Description:

Fine Late 18th, Early 19th Century New England Iron Tasting Spoon

Great example of a late 18th, early 19th century blacksmith made spoon dating circa 1790-1820.

Spoons such as this are often referred to as ‘tasting spoons’ as they were meant for just that.  The small shallow bowl of the piece would have been inserted in to a kettle, iron pot or other hearth cooking device to sample the ingredients cooking therein.  The hearth attendant would then vary the recipe they were creating by adding various dried herbs, mortar ground salt or pepper pods, etc.

As you can see the blacksmith who created this piece worked in a fine overall form with some nice design elements including little ‘rat-tail’ hanging loop.

Just a nice example of period New England metalware offered for a period of one week without reserve and a very low starting bid.

Measures approximately 14" in length.
