Fine Early 1800s Persian Austrian Silver Teapot & Creamer
Description
EXCEPTIONAL ANTIQUE SOLID SILVER TEAPOT & CREAMER
Persia/Austria
1840 or Earlier
These exceptional pieces have a quite mysterious provenance, as it is a matched set with the underside of the lid hallmarked with Austria-Hungary marks for 1840 & the creamer unmarked, but I purchased these from a private collector of fine Persian silver, who says that the pieces were hand-made in Persia during the early 1800s & then imported into Austria, where the silversmith added his own marks, along with those of his country. The style, constuction, & decoration is decidedly Persian, so I have little doubt that this is more than likely the case.
They are both extraordinarily beautiful, with the footed teapot having a stunning bulbous form with a wide curled & flared rim, a wonderful arched spout with fine repousse work & a heart-shaped opening, & an elegant, upraised lid topped with a gorgeous hand-hammered & freely formed floral finial, which attaches to the lid by a silver screw. The entire body & lid are then covered with exquisite hand-engraved flowers & foliage that appear to be poppies, each one embellished with hand-hammered detailing. The footed creamer is also beautifully formed, corresponding to that of the teapot & has the same exquisite engraved floral detailing & decoration, including on the wide lip of the flared spout, & both pieces have fine scrolled wood handles covered in black lacquer & attached by tiny hand-built silver pegs. Each piece is magnificent & they are true masterpieces of silverwork & design.
The teapot measures 6-1/2 inches tall, 6-3/8 inches wide, weighs a 10.6 ounces, or 303 grams, including the wood handle which is very light & is in with no damage whatsoever, only some very minor wear to the lacquer. The creamer measures 4-1/2 inches tall, 4-3/8 inches wide, weighs 6 ounces, or 170 grams, including the handle, & is also in with no damage, only a little more wear to the lacquer, which can easily be reapplied, if desired. Both handles have a small amount of movement, but they are both firmly attached with no problems.
The hallmarks are very interesting, the teapot marked to the inner lid with a cartouche containing the letter A (Vienna), 13 (13/16 lothig for silver purity of .813), & 1840, read from left to right. There is also a makers mark of AZ, which is most likely for Aloys Zitterhofer, an Viennnese silversmith from 1827 until 1864, but as I have stated above, I firmly believe that these 2 exquisite silver pieces were made in Persia during the early 1800's, then imported into Austria & remarked, especially as the matching creamer bears no hallmarks. There also appear to be 2 tiny marks to the center, one possibly a flower, but I am not sure of this as they are very difficult to make out. What I do know is that these are very rare, incredibly beautiful, one of a kind pieces that are truly magnificent in each & every detail.
