Gorgeous Hand Painting on this Very Old Sewing Machine
The gear driven hand crank still turns and drives the needle up and down even though I can see some VERY old and dusty thread would around the shaft of the bottom gear. There is some thread that seems to be wound around the top gear as well. Roses and gold scrolling designs cover the sewing surface and the housing that drives the needle up and down. The whole machine is 12″ across x 9.5″ at the tallest thread holder (and over all tallest point) x about 5″ in diameter across the handle mechanism. Not sure if the weight of this kept it steady or if it might have fitted on or into a stand of some sort. Most parts look to be cast with that black enamel paint and then the fancy decoration. Looks like the foot kind of fed the fabric through as it went along. There are some letters “PLIED FO…” (part of applied for as in patent?) on that guide like item that is fastened to the main sewing surface, but other than that I see no manufacturers name. I am calling it a New England Type and dating it 1870’s by way of a reference book that had pictures of similar machines. I do not think it is a toy, even though it is small compared to today’s machines, again I am guessing based on what I saw in a book that featured old sewing machine history. The handle itself is wood. What a different world it was when someone or some company could produce a beautiful piece of useful equipment that would last over 100 years and NOT put their name on it!! It weighs about 3 to 4 pounds I would guess.
