A water fowl (“Lom”) bird sculpture by Paul Hoff for Gustavsberg, Sweden

A

This
vintage stoneware bird sculpture of a water fowl, is by the famous Swedish
ceramicist and sculptor Paul Hoff. It is about 7 3/4 inches long and 4 1/2
inches high. It is in perfect vintage condition. The effect is similar to a very
realistic decoy.

There
are several series of bird and animal sculptures by Hoff. This is the studio
series, made in smaller editions, and finished by cleverly impressing the clay
with a design of the footprints of the bird, as well as the Gustavsberg
signature. The name of the bird is also impressed, but it is difficult to read,
perhaps “Lum” or “Lom”, but I have been unable to find the translation—I belive
it to be a female Common Merganser. This is NOT one of the mass-produced
editions made with a printed signature only.

I
am also listing a male and female Eider duck, and other waterfowl by Hoff, also
from the studio series.

Gustavsberg history
dates back to 1826, but the Swedish pottery company is perhaps the most famous
and well-regarded in Sweden’s history. Its many famous designers include Stig
Lindberg, Berndt Friberg, Lisa Larson, and Wilhelm Kage, as well as Paul Hoff.
The company was broken up in the 1990’s.
