Presented is a pretty scarce circa 1899 high grade Elgin 18s grade 181 with 21 jewels housed in a nice yellow gold filled open face case, with its original double sunk dial and recently serviced high grade movement. This movement is a nice looking and definitely scarce, with only 6000 produced in 5 runs (and of that number, how many have survived), Grade 181 with 21 Jewels and is marked “Elgin Nat’l Watch Co. U.S.A. Adjusted 21 Jewels Saftey Pinion”, bears the serial number 8499092, and has fancy damaskeened nickle plates with gold lettering. It also has gold jewel settings and gold balance screws and is a lever set. This watch has been recently serviced and is running great with wonderful motion to the balance. If you were going to pick at anything, there is some light oxydation on some of the steel parts, which is just cosmetic, and that’s it. The yellow gold filled screw back and bezel case is in nice condition with a slightly worn but still distinct floral motif on the back and the only wearthru I see is on the neck and bottom of the body. I also want to point out the bow is a slightly different color so I’m sure its a replacement. It is unpersonalized and both bezels screw on and off properly. It measures a large 54mm in width, has a new glass crystal and it is marked on the inside “B&B Royal Warranted 20 Years”. The original dial is the earlier style double sunk enamel is in good condition with several light hairlines and 2 tiny “flea bites” near the outer edge, which I’ve tried to depict in the images. For some reason, most of these early style dials that I’ve seen over the years are in generally rough/poor condition with this being one of the better examples I’ve seen. It has arabic numbers with the cool outer red 5 minute track and nice original blued steel hands. All in all, I feel this is a very good example and really scarce Elgin railroad watch.
