You are the UNUSUAL 18K SOLID GOLD 1/4 REPEATER POCKET WATCH WITH HELICAL HAIRSPRING AND FUSEE pictured below.
This is a very strange (but nice) pocket watch! It runs (currently keywind and key set) and it repeats correctly (by activating slide in the band). I believe this was once a keyless wind watch (by using a winding crown) but was converted to keywind perhaps because of difficulties with the design. It still has some of the winding wheels visible on the top plate – you can see where the fusee must have once had a winding wheel as well. The button for opening the top cover appears attached to what was the stem of the winder (pictured below). The dial is very strange with an upside down seconds bit at 12 o’clock. I have no idea why it is like that!
You can see this is a very high grade watch. The movement is jeweled to the hammers and the escape and lever have cap jewels. It is odd that this watch has a helical hairspring setup as you don’t often see it on repeaters unless they are also chronometers. Likewise I’m surprised to see that this has a fusee and barrel given it’s apparent vintage. The case (marked 18k) has the same serial no. of 9572 as found on the pillar plate of the movement. When you look at the pillar plate (the dial side) you can see where some of the original winding parts are missing – the clutch & winding pinion.
Who knows? Perhaps this was a prototype or experimental watch. The case is heavy and well made. Without the movement, inner crystal, or button/stem in the pendant it weighs 65.6 grams. The bow is still stiff. The covers do not open past 90 degrees. The hinges are good. There is no damage to the case – just a little normal smoothing from pocket wear. Winding holes were cut in the cuvette (dust cover) partially obscuring engraved names – I see a ‘Devey’ maybe and perhaps a ‘C. Prost’. I don’t know that the names indicate a maker. The watch diameter is about 48.7mm around the round portion of the case.
