Nice Refinished Antique Dome Top Steamer Trunk With Straps and Buckles,Working Lock & Key, and Interior Tray

Here is a beautiful refinished dome top steamer trunk or travel trunk from the mid to late 1800’s.  This one is a more utilitarian piece.  It was made to be used and it is not as flashy or gaudy looking as some of the other trunks that we offer.  This one should appeal to the primitives crowd since it has a lot of nice rustic wood showing.  The trunk appears to be made up of pine base wood with poplar outer slat boards.  The wood has been finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax to protect the wood and give it a nice appearance.  The wood is in it’s natural color and it has some typical older nicks and dings in various places.  These character marks or beauty marks are quite common on the majority of all trunks that we refinish.  They are part of the trunk’s antiquity, proving that they have been around for a long, long time.  Here are the dimensions: from left to right across the front is 32 inches, from floor to top is approximately 21 1/2 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 18 1/4 inches.  This wonderful trunk comes with the original working lock.  This one actually had the key with this trunk when we purchased it.  So it may be the original key also.  The lock does work.  This wonderful dome top has unique unusual spring loaded front latches which are patent dated.  They read, “Pat Oct 12 80”, referring to 1880.  They are unique in which you pull down o the spring loaded lever to engage and disengage the latches.  They both work properly since the springs are still intact.  We have run a pair of Amish made leather straps with roller buckles up the front and across the top.  They are functional and when buckled, they do secure the trunk’s top to it’s base like the latches and lock do also.  The side handles have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps.  Going to the interior, we have removed the paper lining since it was quite worn out looking.  We did make sure to leave the original picture on the right hand side under the top which portrays a Victorian woman posing.  We added a trunk maker’s style picture to the left side under the top portraying Victorian children playing.  The interior wood is rough cut.  You can see the old saw blade markings in the wood.  We also made a nice tray for the interior.  The interior wood and tray have received two coats of polyurethane.  There are a couple of small knots missing in the wood on the bottom of the interior.  Going to the exterior bottom underneath the trunk, it still has the four factory original metal casters, one at each corner.  We have given the bottom of this trunk two coats of polyurethane simply to make the trunk nice and clean for placement anywhere inside your home.  This early trunk could make a great storage chest for blankets, clothing, and other personal belongings, especially in a bedroom at the foot of the bed.  Our trunks have been making wonderful lifetime lasting gifts for people on special occasions over the past 11 years or so on website.  We have well over a thousand great customers and we encourage you to read some of their nice remarks about their beautiful trunks in our positive feedback section.  We are currently offering some nice trunks of unique sizes and styles.  We hope one will suit your needs.  We have sold some in the past as wedding gifts, especially around the month of June.  This particular trunk has turned out to be pretty nice and does have some features that aren’t always obtainable on the trunks that we refinish.  First of all, it has the working lock with key.  Second it has the patent dated unique latches. And third is the interior tray.  We surely hope that the new owner will receive many, many nice compliments from anyone who happens to see this nice early American trunk inside their beautiful home.                                   &nbsp           &nbsp
