“Mountmellick Work” derives its name from the Town in Ireland and this type of embroidery was started in about 1825. It is a type of Whitework but differs from others as there are not drawn or open spaces. The idea of the work is to arrange the majority of the stitches to lie on the surface with little thread on the wrong side. The attraction of this work is that it looks real almost 3D. Traditionally worked on Heavy Cotton with thick white cotton yarn with similar designs to what is on the item that I am selling.

A Stunning Piece of Irish MountMellick Whitework probably dating from the late part of the 19th century.
This case is a fine example of this type of embroidery worked on a Heavy White Cotton. It has been Embroidered with a thick white Cotton, the designs feature Flowers and leaves etc. The Embroider has used many classic stitches including knots and padded stitchs giving a raised look almost 3D. This case has has a fold down flap to front. The Piece is finished with a Traditional Knitted Fringe.
The Size is approx 21″ x 18.5″including the fringe
