RARE DATED 1793 PENNSYLVANIA SHOW SAMPLER WITH 40 DESIGNS GREAT CONDITION
Description:
AN EXTREMELY RARE 18TH CENTURY SIGNED AND DATED PENNSYLVANIA "SHOW" SAMPLER, SIGNED "JJJ" and DATED 1793.
Done in the typical 18th century manner, it is made of wool thread on a homespun or white linen back. It appears to be a typical schoolgirl "SHOW" sampler of the period.There is a single line of alphabets on the top. It does however had an added Forty (40) various needlework designs in various patterns. There are "LOVE BIRDS", TREES AND FLOWERS, SUNFLOWERS, HEARTS AND A CANDLE HOLDER. All done in blues, greens, roses and tans.
It also has the typical Frayed edges of a
"SHOW" sampler. This style was used to showcase the skills of the young girl in her needlework studies.
The sampler was originally purchased at a Buck's County, PA estate sale about 15 years ago. The collector who lives in Connecticut had it professionally framed here in Wethersfield. The sampler was professionally conserved with acid free backing and placed into a contemporary frame about 10 years ago.
The condition is very nice. It is bright in color and strong in design with only the most minor of damages and there appears to be no repairs at all. The colors are bright. All the edging is intact. Similar examples can be found in "The Pennsylvania German Collection", the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The frame is 19" by 19" and the sampler is 15" by 15".
