You are the RARE BALL WATCH CO NO. 333 18 SIZE 21 JEWEL POCKET WATCH (BY ELGIN) WITH UNUSUAL 24 HOUR CANADIAN DIAL + ‘5 POSITIONS ‘ (VERY RARE) MARKED ON THE MOVEMENT pictured below.
This is a VERY RARE RR Grade WATCH. It is all original save for the crystal (a new glass replacement) and comes with it’s ORIGINAL CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY EMPLOYEES’ WATCH RATING RECORD! ADDITIONALLY it is marked ‘5 positions’ on the movement – I’ve only heard of one other Elgin 18s 21j Ball marked this way – all others are NOT marked ‘5 positions’. Finally, this has a seldom seen Canadian dial with 24hr markings.
The watch DOES NOT RUN because it needs a clean and oil. The balance staff is good. The dial has damage as seen below. Chips at 6 o’clock look to be glued back in place. The watch is lever set as it should be. This works fine. The original Canada made case says ‘Cashier A.W.C.Co Gold Filled Extra’. Made by the American Watch Case Co. The case has some smoothing and brassing at the pendant and bow. Also a thin strip or two of brassing around middle of watch where you grip the front/back covers to unscrew them.
The time card (or Rating Record) is shown below and this watch is identified by serial no. I believe it also says (if I can make it out): Owned by D McKay, occupation ‘fire’, AB Cook? – the Inspector, address of Medicine Hat – also has maker, grade, last cleaned. How many cards like this remain with their original RR grade watch? I’d guess very few.
I’ve had this watch looked over by a couple experts and they say it is the genuine article and a very desirable, rare watch! Don’t miss out.
