8″ High x 7″ Wide
Skewers are 6″, 6 3/4″ 6″, 7 1/2″
A truly exceptional example of a late 18th century American wrought iron skewer holder, circa 1740-1790, complete with it’s original matching skewers.
This masterful example of period New England ironware exhibits all the
signs one would expect with a period example with some great design
elements.
Perhaps
the most striking design feature of this early example is the formed in
heart shaped center on the piece. The blacksmith who made this example
worked in a wonderful period design, with the center exhibiting punched heart shape.
Considering
the more elaborate design to this piece versus a simple double arm
hook, it’s been suggested this piece was either from a home of some
stature, or the piece was made with the special intentions of it being a
special gift (domestic items were commonly given to the woman of a home
on special occasions, the heart would further reinforce this notion, as
possibly even a wedding or anniversary present).
Commonly
hung off mantles an near open hearth fireplaces, skewer holders such as
this were used to support meat cooking skewers off one of the two
formed arms. As you can see this example is complete with four
remaining flattened skewers, each finished with a little subtle end
curl.
Some
slight pitting to the piece from age, else a near fine example of
period ironware rivaling that of any illustrated in such volumes as “The
Sorber Collection of Colonial Iron” by Plummer and the “Schiffer Iron
Book”.
