Extremely rare and most beautiful, this antique cockade fan was realised with an extreme skill, probably for a high rank dignitary.
This type of fan has two long guard sticks and (in this case) 19 short sticks.
The sticks are laquered in different colours: black, red, brown, silver, green and gold. When opening (rivet towards you, push gently the upper guard stick to the right) the leaf opens like a peacock’s tail untill finally taking the shape of a sun and the two guard sticks form a handle. Given the great age of this fan the leaf has dried and cant be “streched out” completely any more. Pulling the two guard stick completely together would certainly stress the leaf and lead to the break of a fold. Picture 1 and 3 show the best opening.
The colours are fresh and bright, the paper thick and strong, no wear to the lacker, it seems not to have been used very often. The weak point becomes the folds…just because the paper is so strong! So better not handle it to often and display it – if possible – framed.
On the front side of the leaf the little silk garments and the applied bone faces have been cared for with utmost attention by a gifted painter. The detail on the faces as well as the shapes, colours and arrangements of the flowers on the reverse side are astonishing and worth taking a magnifying glass for close examination.
A silk tassel with 3 beads ornates the guard stick
size closed about 27 cm
open about 41 cm
across circle about 30 cm
There are 2 major weak points: see 3 last pictures (picture 11, pink flowers correspond to the reverse of picture 10)
These precious and delicate fans are send, in condition as described, very well
protected, and have to be unpacked carefully and handled with the utmost
attention. I am sorry but I wont accept any more returns due to
inadequate handling by new passionate fan amateurs.

As far as possible (up to 2 kilo), and unless otherwise required by the buyer I use a low-rate small parcel shipping that usually travels between 2 and 3 week for a reasonable price and can be tracked and insured up to 150 Euro.
The express mail, if travelling only 1 week, starts at 30$ + insurance and requires more complete forms to fill, customs and other…
I have to downsize the reserves of a workshop covering various domains, periods and countries and for the most I am in no way an expert! But I always try to be precise and do my best to get some information about the things I offer for auction before listing.
I’m always glad to combine shipping but please let me know in advance when you plan several purchases (to avoid unnecessary packing)
I charge no packing or handling fees and I use recycled wrappings and boxes as long as available. Indicated shipping price is an estimation. If after packing there is a difference, I refund the exceeding amount, if I underestimated, the difference is for me. Except snow-storm or car-problem I send the day following payment.
Please be aware that whatever I’m listing, (mostly fabric, materials, costume pieces, lace and accessoires to repair) it can sometimes be in good condition but it is NEVER NEW from a shop shelf!!!! (so signs of a former life are often noticeable unless they are described clearly as VGC or AS NEW)
