Hand Embroidered 1912 ~ historic and significant year
January 17 – British polar explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and a team of four become the second expeditionary group to reach the South Pole
April 14 – RMS Titanic strikes an iceberg in the northern Atlantic Ocean. She sinks the following day with the loss of 1500 lives.
It is with great pleasure we present for sale this wonderful pair of authentic Irish linen bath towels from an historiacally important date .. 1912, as mentioned two historic events occurred that year:- the sinking of the Titanic and Captain Robert Falcon Scott exploration of the South Pole,.. the linen was found in a canvas English oak steamer/stay trunk full of antique linen, some dating back to 1851, these towels are offered in as new and unused condition with lage scale Shamrock design and banded each end deccorated with a large hand embroidered monogram of M L to one corner and dated 1912, the pair are traditionaly finished with hem stitch c1900
Measurements each 24″ by 40″ each x2
Presented in excellent antique condition, no damge or soils, freshly laundered and clean, pressed back into their original folds, stored away and treasured for 100 years… I wonder if the owners of these towels perhapps a newly married couple were due to board the passenger liner later on that year after the ill fated Titanic’s Inaugural voyage?
