Old ANTIQUE 1880’s HAND EMBRIODERED SAMPLER Lottie MISS BALDWIN’s SCHOOL Aged 12

Early American Antique hand-made embroidered sampler –

circa: 1880’s

Provenance:

A small piece of paper with pencil writing has been inserted under the glass — likely at the time of framing — it reads:

“Lottie Gumersill worked this sampler, when she went to Miss Baldwin’s School at the age of 12 years, school at Clinton Street.”

 Miss Baldwin’s School for Girls was the common name for the The Baldwin School — a preparatory school for girls bound for Bryn Mawr College, the school was founded in 1888.

An intricate and well done hand-crafted needle point embroidery sampler. Unusual, as the colors have remained strong and vibrant — considering age of this sampler is approximatley 124 years. 

DESIGN:

Alphabet in capital block letters in dark red thread and underneath there are rows of dark “pine-tree” green threads in seven different line designs. The same green color is used for edge line design (near the frame) on all four sides with a dark musket brown interior line.

The work itself is excellent handiwork in the embroidery and condition is just excellent — no holes, no stains, and no tears that we can see at all (see photos.) The piece has been preserved and protected well – under the glass of an older vintage frame with original paper backing. With a vintage Framer’s Seal on reverse reads John Nighland ART DEALER, 13 Midland Avenue, Montclair, N.J. Some minor losses to frame (see photos.) This is an “estate find” we came across in central Connecticut.

Approximate Dimensions:

Framed size 9″ length x 18-1/2″ height. Sampler size: 8″ length x 17-1/2″ height, measurements are based on sight and are approximate — we measured while inside the frame and did not remove this sampler from the frame.
