This is a very nice antique solid sterling silver spoon with a nursery rhyme-type theme. It is probably from around 1898 or so. It would make a great gift for yourself or a new parent, grandparent, aunt or anyone, to commemorate a birth.
The bowl is hand-engraved with a scene of two young children going up a staircase, dressed in flowing nighclothes. The one highest up is carrying a lighted candle. Can you imagine parents letting kids do that these days? Times have changed. No writing in the bowl, only the scene.
It is large, about 5-3/8″ long.
The spoon itself is the popular Rose pattern, introduced by Wallace of Connecticut in 1898.
No other engraving, other than the bowl design.
It is marked on the back of the handle with “Pat. 1898 Sterling” along with the old RW&S stag head hallmark for Wallace, a high-end company back then.
Condition: It is in very good condition. It has a tiny bit of very light surface scratching and a little tarnish here and there, not much.
It weighs about 17.1 grams or .60 ounce (.55 Troy oz.) on my digital point scale.
