Lovely antique tiny baby doll rattle from the pre-1900 period. This would be fabulous on an early doll like a Bebe Bru Teteur or an early Kestner baby (like Hilda or Sammy, etc). The rattle is suspended from the original chain, which has a beautiful aged patina. The rattle actually still tinkles when you shake it! I think the chain and the rattle are made of brass. The handle of the rattle is made of bone, the rattle part has a beautiful shape to it with several fancy ridges, chain is a darling round chainlink which alternates with oval links. The rattle has a few tiny dings in it commensurate with age, the bone handle has a worn area as well, but it does not look like a chip per se because it is smooth, so perhaps it was flawed like that from the bone. I took lots of photos to see the condition of this rare little rattle. SO hard to find authentic antique rattles in such a diminutive size. Only measures 2 1/4″ long the entire rattle part, when including the chain it measures 3″ long, rattle is about 3/4″ at widest part of rattle going across.
