This set of 12 Japanese sakazuki, or dish-like lacquered-wood sake cups used for formal occasions, is around 100 years old or possibly older, and comes in its original paulownia wood case. There is faint writing on the sliding front panel of the case, which seems to give a date from the Bunkyuu era (1862-1864), but it’s not clear enough to be sure. The rest of the inscriptions are illegible. There are also some later, white markings on one side of the case, which say “Small Dish” and something like “Vermillion”.
All of the cups are in basically good condition, with no chips or cracks in the lacquer, but there is some wear and some scratches. Of note, however, is that although the case is pretty surely original to these cups, there is slight difficulty closing the front panel when they’re inside, perhaps due to warping of the panel. The box is quite worn and has several small bug-holes, and the slat on the top edge of the front panel sticks up a bit (shown in the last sample photo), but somehow the panel fits squarely once the panel is shut (as in the second-to-last sample photo). The box is otherwise structurally sound.
Size:
Each cup is about W4 3/8″ (111mm) X H13/16″ (22mm).
The box is about W9 15/16″ (253mm) X H5 9/16″ (141mm) X D5 1/4″ (133mm).

General Note about :
For all our items, we set the shipping according to the fastest and most economical method. Generally, we set it as Air Mail if the shipping charge will be around fifteen dollars or less, and as SAL (economy airmail) if it would be over fifteen dollars via regular airmail. Nonetheless, we are always happy to change shipping methods if faster (and thus more expensive) or cheaper (and thus slower) shipping is desired. The shipping options available are (from fastest and most expensive to slowest and least expensive): EMS, Air Mail, SAL (economy airmail), Surface.
Registered mail with tracking is also available for an additional US$5.00 above the standard Air Mail shipping cost stated in the description. (The registered-mail charge will become lower if the dollar continues to strengthen against the yen.)
We are glad to combine multiple items for shipping, and of course will discount some of the postage charges for each item after the first one. Please note that the shipping discount is not large for heavy items, but for small, light things we will discount the shipping charges by 40-100 percent, depending on how heavy it is and how it needs to be packed.
We ship at least once and very often twice a week, and so most of the time items will be in the mail within no more than 10 business days after we have received payment. We also always send a brief note informing buyers when their items have shipped.
