FINEST ANTIQUE VICTORIAN RICH WINE SUBTLE STRIPED SILK VELVET BODICE PANEL

FINEST ANTIQUE VICTORIAN RICH WINE SUBTLE STRIPED SILK VELVET BODICE PANEL

FINEST

THIS IS MY ONLY PIECE.

This auction is for a beautiful, quality 1800s silk velvet fragment from the Victorian era.  It is very unique in its texture, having stripes, but very subtle depending on how the fabric is turned.  The stripe is about 1/8″ wide.  I would also like to note that the shade is a rich merlot wine;it is not red or pink.  It was so very difficult to capture its true shade, but I believe that one will be pleased.  It is silk with a cotton base and its pile is close to the surface.  This is not drapey or slinky like silk/rayon velvet.  It has been salvaged from a partially finished jacket in which this is a front panel.  This fabric is perfect for embellishing a jacket, i.e., cuffs, collar, purse or most definitely suitable for a doll’s jacket.  Although it is lightweight, it is not super thin or flimsy, but with substance.  It is such gorgeous fabric, that it could possibly be French in origin.  If it is important that it be a specific shade or have a certain drape, please think carefully before placing a bid, since this is being sold “As Is” and is non-returnable.  This is in wonderful condition with no stains, tears or rips.  This is my only piece.

This is folded over on one side where there are three places that there are pairs of handmade heavy threads where a hook would go to close the jacket.  This measures (these measurements are going with the stripe) approximately 9″ top-to-bottom on one side underneath the curve;the opposite side is about 16.5″;it is 19 1/4″ from the very top of the shoulder area to bottom edge; it is about 16″ top-to-bottom from top curved edge to bottom edge.

Measuring (going across/width) straight along shoulder area it is 5″.  It is 11″ from top edge of bodice;it is 13 3/4″ where it is below curved arm area;and finally, it is 13 3/4″ at very bottom…..Please note:  Measurements across the textile have included the portion folded over.  This is useable since there is not a mark where it was folded.

It should be noted that this is a rare find;I have only had one other silk velvet somewhat similar in the past five and have never come across another since.  It is a treasure and should be used for something very special;unfortunately, it is not the largest piece, but enough for an article of doll clothing of the era.
