Burlwood Sewing Workbox & Tools
French
* Circa 1820
This
early antique French workbox
is outstanding. It dates to the age of the Palais Royal. It
is
made of gorgeous burled wood and faceted steel studs border the top and
create a motif in the center. The
interior has the original burgundy velvet and yellow
paper
linings
and a built in velvet pincushion is at the front. The top has the
original mirror trimmed with yellow silk chenille. Compartments in
the center tool
tray
hold cut steel and bone tools including a stiletto, tweezers/earspoon,
needle
case, thimble, bodkin, penknife, perfume bottle, 4 thread winders,
tambour hook and 2 pairs of steel scissors. The
little round spaces holding the winders are lined with mirrors and silk
chenille.
The
center tray lifts out and below is a paper lined space to hold silks,
notions and work in progress.
The scissors have sharp points and cut, but
need sharpening.
The thimble is about an
American size 5/6. The
cut glass perfume bottle has no chips or cracks. The tambour hook is
complete and screws together well in all directions. It has two tiny
steel hooks. One of the winders has a repaired crack and there’s a tiny
chip at the top of the thimble, but all of the other bone tools are
perfect with no damage. The scissors, penknife and possibly the thimble
are not original to the box. I think the needle case, winders, scent
bottle, stiletto, bodkin, tweezers and tambour hook are.
The box is in overall great condition with a lovely old patina. It has
a working key but the box doesn’t close perfectly in the front so that
the lock will engage.
Aside
from some very minor chipped veneer at the left back corner,
the wood is in . The
interior velvet is in great condition with only minimal wear. The
hinges are
original and strong. It measures 9 5/8″ x 6 3/4″ x 3 1/2″
high. Postage
