HISTORY
The Elgin Watch Company (known also as the Elgin National Watch Company) was the largest USA watch company for production..
The company was commenced in 1864 in Elgin, Illinois USA as the National Watch Company.
In 1874, the company changed their name to the Elgin National Watch Company, with this name remaining until production ceased in the early 1960’s.
The Elgin National Watch Company in relation to the American Horological industry is extremely important. Many Elgin watches made over 100 years ago are still proving to be reliable and accurate time keepers.
The Illinois Watchcase Company changed its name sometime between 1903 and 1905 to the Star Watch Case Company, which is sometimes referred to as the Star Watchcase Company
Originally founded as the Illinois Watchcase Company in Elgin, Illinois in 1897 making watch cases for the Elgin Watch Company.
The founders were Otto A. Starke, Fred Hermann and Alfred W. Church. The company incorporated on February 7, 1905. The first officers of the new Star Watch Case Company were Otto A. Starke as its president; Fred Hermann, vice president; Warren Antoine Cartier, secretary; and Alfred W. Church as the treasurer.
The Illinois Watch Case Company was another major manufacture in the city of Elgin Illinois. It had many brand names that it used on its watch cases, such as “Elgin Giant”, “Elgin Pride”, “Tivoli”, “Spartan”, and “Elgin Commander”. Later on, IWCCo also started the “Elgin American” line of lady’s compacts and cigarette cases.
