BAUSCH & LOMB ANTIQUE PETROGRAPHIC POLARIZING MICROSCOPE OPTICAL COMPONENTS IN CASE
You are invited to submit bids for a set of Bausch & Lomb antique Petrographic Polarizing (POL) Microscope optical components in a leather covered wood case. Included in the case is a substage condenser with a flip top auxiliary lens and provisions for a Nicol prism assembly, but the Nicol prism itself is missing. Also included in the case is what appears to be a specialty eyepiece with an integral prism and a 360-degree vernier scale found around its base. The prism in the eyepiece appears to be a Glan-Thompson prism.
The size of the case is 4.25 inches wide by 2.5 inches tall and 2.5 inches deep. The top of the case is engraved with the name of the manufacturer in gilt enhanced block letters. The interior of the case is felt-lined to protect the contents. A metal clasp holds the case closed when the components are stored within. This case with its enclosed set of optical components appears to date from the early years of the 20th Century.
The condenser is in very good condition with no defects evident in the optics. However, the Nicol prism assembly that would normally be included in the base of the condenser housing is missing. The prism in the eyepiece is in with no defects, including no “prism disease” or decementation evident. The leather on the case is worn on the outside and it has a replacement cloth hinge of more recent vintage.
