Up for sale is an Antique Thonet Bentwood Arm Chair with an Original Cane Seat. This chair is in and was made in Austria c. 1900’s or earlier. The chair measures overall 22″ wide across the arms, 38″ tall, 27 3/4″ deep. The seat is 18 1/2″ from the seat top to the floor and 20″ in diameter. The caning is in excellent shape with the exception of the underside where there is some gray/black staining in areas (See pics #10, #11). The stain does not show on the top of the chair seat. I have not tried to remove it. The wood is in fantastic shape with no breaks or damage. There is a newer screw that is in the back left of the arm (see pic #9). The right arm has been rubbed over the years but that is to be expected for a chair of this age (see pic # 8). Overall it is a beautiful antique chair.
Information I found on the internet: The Thonet chair earned a gold medal when it was shown at the 1867 World Exposition in Paris. It has been praised by many designers and architects, including Le Corbusier, who said “Never was a better and more elegant design and a more precisely crafted and practical item created”.
