Superb Victorian Sterling Silver Chatelaine Hung Sewing Pencil by Thornhill & Co of London circ 1895

This Antique Chatelaine, Pendant or Watch Fob Pencil measures approximately 2 3/8 inches or 66 mm in length from the top of the hanging ring to the end of the pencil’s silver body and it is 1/2 an inch or 13 mm across the widest part of its body.

The pencil is made from a sterling silver body in a tubular shape that has a wonderful raised relief and engraved scroll, floral, foliate and bird decorated body with a circular step decorated open end, it has a silver swivel ring with a silver hanging ring on the top of its body as the pencil would have been hung as a pendant from a house keepers chatelaine and it has an engraved floral and foliate decorated sliding toggle on its outer body that extends and retracts the inner pencil, the pencil has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the side of the body has been impressed with the London maker or retailers mark of W.Thornhill & Co who were at 144 to 145 New Bond Street, London, although I have been unable to find any silver marks as is very typical with these antique items the pencil has been tested and it is guaranteed as being made from sterling silver, I estimate that this pencil dates from 1890 – 1900.

The condition is used and near Mint for its age.

The pencil has No Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the pencil is straight, the decoration is very crisp, the sliding toggle is working perfectly, the inner pencil extends and retracts as it should with ease, the swivel ring on the top is working perfectly, the silver maker or retailers marks are still clearly legible although as this pencil is used antique it does have some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique pendant or chatelaine hung pencil would make a superb addition to any collection and that it can still be used today, I also think that it looks absolutely fantastic considering that it’s around 120 or so years old.

This Superb Quality Victorian Sterling Silver Chatelaine Hung Sewing Pencil by W Thornhill & Co of London circa 1895 is one of several pieces of antique and collectable silver that I have also listed.
