Antique Sterling Souvenir Spoon

This is a wonderful antique sterling souvenir spoon. This is a rare spoon, and I cannot find another like it for sale elsewhere.

This particular spoon shows the figure of a Chinese American man from San Francisco. This spoons dates to the late 1800s, when there was a large influx of Chinese immigrants to San Francisco. The Chinese figure is a caricature, much like the depiction of African Americans in Southern spoons of the time. The man holds what looks like a pipe in one hand, and and something else in the other (I’m not sure what it is.) Lower on the spoon are depictions of a serpent, a bowl of rice with chopsticks, and Chinese characters. On the bowl is a nice depiction of a Chinese shoemaker (with long hair and a brimmed hat) sitting at a table, working at his craft. The words “Chinatown San Francisco” and “Shoe Maker” are etched in the bowl. There is a monogram N.W.G. on the reverse.

The spoon is marked “sterling” with a maker’s mark from the company C,B & H (Codding Brothers & Heilborn). This spoon measures about 5-3/8″ inches in length and weighs 16.5 grams. It is in with no dents, breaks, or repairs.

This spoon is part of a single collection that I am selling on this week. Please see my other auctions for details. I will combine shipping charges on request.
