Offered in this auction is an ANTIQUE JULIUS BAUER & CO CORNET BUGLE HORN 3 VALVE & LANYARD CIVIL WAR ERA MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
Julius Bauer (1831-1894), a major instrument maker, importer, and dealer established a music store and manufacturing facility in Chicago and is the earliest manufacturer of brass instruments in that city. His son William M. Bauer expanded the business as importers of brass instruments and the manufacture of pianos. The firm also established a retail store in NYC in 1868. All brass instruments signed “J. Bauer, Chicago†were made prior to 1866 in Chicago by the Bauer firm and are considered CW era instruments as opposed to those signed “J. Bauer & Co.†Fresh out of a local Old Milwaukee area estate, it’s exactly in the same condition in which it was found. I believe the red lanyard was added later to dress it up for display. The valves do not move and 3 places where it was soldered have come loose (including the mouthpiece). It has dents and wear associated with a used brass instrument of this age. This would be a great restoration project. Measures about 13 3/4″ with the mouthpiece in place. Please take a CAREFUL look at the photos and ask necessary.
