Rare pre-1860 Jaques London In Statu Quo Chess Set & Board

A very early Jaques of London travel chess set and hinged
chessboard featuring a patented locking system. The pegged pieces are stained
red and natural polished ox bone, board set inside a mahogany frame with
rosewood and holly playing squares, added section for captured pieces.

 

One side of the box stamped In
Statu Quo Chess Board
, the other side stamped Jaques Patentees London.

 

For age and use the pieces and board in good condition,
working locking system, complete (32) pieces, frame and board with good finish
and patina, measures overall 11 x 9 inches with a one half
inch king height.

 

The set and board dated 1857-60 by the design of the pieces, the
Jaques stamp (without the & Son added after 1860) and the slots for
captured pieces introduced in 1857.
