A truely beautiful ladies fan with carved mother of pearl handle, hand decorated with central scene and a variety of lovely gold coloured sequins. The centre of the fan is decorated with a Georgian couple in a garden scene, the lady is seated and playing a musical instrument, in the distance you can see a church. At the bottom left hand corner there is a signature E B, maybe Bryant or similar – unsure. To either side the fan is decorated with floral swags highlighted with sequins again in swags and a variety of sequin types. The top border of the fan is also decorated with sequins, tear shaped in leaf shaped clusters, there is also a border around the hand painted scene with pretty little rosettes. The handle of the fan is mother of pearl, carved and highlighted in a gold/silvery finish and the same along the closed edge of the handle ( see photos ) The fan looks to be made from silk – looking under a magnify glass the fabric is very finely woven like a mesh, soft but firm – or could be some other kind of gauze and i believe the fan is Regency in date c1820. The body of the fan is in sound condition with no tears or splits there are a few sequins missing along the top border, a few loose, one or two missing across the sides – all looking under a magnify glass. The painted scene has some wear along the folds mainly to the musical instrument, a little bare here. The handle has no damage and there is minor wear to the decoration mainly along the closed edge from handling. Please ask any necessary questions as I am not a fan expert – although not in pristine conditon the fan is still in lovely condition for it’s age and i am not sure what fan collectors hope for. Length of handle 7 1/2ins plus metal hanging loop. No original box.
